The marbling technique has been used since 500 BC, originating most likely from China. Gradually the technique travelled along the Silk Road across Persia to Turkey, where it was then introduced to the west. Marbled paper was once called “Turkish paper”.
With the marbling technique versatile shapes resembling marble are formed. The paper becomes wave-like and looks as if it had gone through “graining”, resembling marble. The papers can be used for; writing letters, preparing envelopes, making book covers and binder covers, coating shelves and boxes, and making wallpaper.

During the course we will prepare masks using an Italian technique from the 1500’s. We will prepare different types of masks, theatre masks, different characters, animal figures, mystical creatures. These masks will be painted and decorated according to each persons own taste. We will also go over different types of decorating techniques and finishing methods.
We will first prepare clay models, from which we will prepare paper masks which will then be dried, painted, and decorated. There is also the possibility of preparing the mask by making a plaster mold of the clay model. With this mold it will then be possible to create numerous masks and to handle the surface of each of them in different ways.
